Introduction

For a long time the GPU market is mostly possessed by two market titans, NVIDIA and AMD. But  the times have changed. The processor manufacturing giant Intel is finally stepping in the game of Graphics Card.

For ages we have been expecting Intel to make a move and finally after a long time of rumors and leaks we got to know the intel Arc GPUs. Although they are rather late in this game but certainly not very far behind.

Intel showcased its XeSS which is a super sampling technology like NVIDIAs DLSS and AMD FSR. The process is rendered at a lower resolution and using AI it outputs at a much higher resolution. Resulting in better gameplay and smoother frame rates while also retaining the overall quality of the image

How is the magic done?

Intel Xe Super Sampling, is an image upscaling technology that uses both spatial and temporal data, and relies on artificial intelligence to do it. Supersampling is an anti-aliasing technology that takes color samples of the pixels in an image at different instances. It then uses this color data and renders the image at a much higher resolution.

XeSS isn’t too complicated to understand. Instead of running a game at native resolution (let’s say 4K), it takes a variety of inputs from the game at a lower resolution (like 1080p). Those inputs feed into the XeSS upscaling engine, which includes an A.I. model to enhance the upscaling. The final result, theoretically, should be an image that looks like native resolution but with much higher performance.

For specifics, XeSS takes depth, motion, color, and lighting inputs from the game. After performing the upscaling, the final results from these inputs are stored in an internal history. That history feeds data to the next incoming frame and the cycle continues. While that’s happening, XeSS takes the frame you see and performs temporal anti-aliasing (TAA) to clean up jagged edges. XeSS replaces traditional anti-aliasing, as it can upscale and perform anti-aliasing in the same step.

Intel XeSS uses a combination of spatial and temporal data, i.e. both image data and motion data, with respect to time to produce the output image. Like DLSS, it passes this data through a trained neural network, harnessing machine learning and artificial intelligence to improve image quality.

The secret sauce is machine learning. Intel Arc Alchemist graphics cards include Xe Matrix Extension (XMX) cores, which run the A.I. model to perform the upscaling

The Team That Worked On This Build

For as long as he can remember, The Gaming Guide has always been interested in computers and gaming. It all started with the Sega Mega Drive and then evolved into PC gaming in his early teens. CS 1.6 was his first go at competitive gaming which soon evolved into CS:Source and now CS:GO – a game that he still plays (almost exclusively) today. Throughout that period he has also been a keen PC builder and enthusiast – dedicating a large portion of his time to the craft. My current rig is an ASUS 5700XT with AMD’s Ryzen 3600X.
